Information and Communication Technology

Key Stage 4 - GCSE

The GCSE ICT is a modular course and contains 4 units consisting of 2 theoretical units assessed by written examination and 2 practical units assessed by controlled tests.

Unit 1: Understanding ICT

Assessment - 1½ hour examination paper

% of total mark - 20%

Description - The examination paper will assess the understanding of ICT in a home and school context.

Unit 2: Solving Problems with ICT

Assessment - 22½ hour controlled assessment over the course of a year

% of total mark - 30%

Description - The pupil will have to prepare a portfolio of work demonstrating the ability to obtain and interpret different types of information and then to use, develop and communicate this information in a final presentation.

Unit 3: ICT in Organisations

Assessment - 1½ hour examination paper

% of total mark - 20%

Description - The examination paper will assess the application of ICT in a business and industry context.

Unit 4: Developing Multimedia ICT Solutions

Assessment - 22½ hour controlled assessment over the course of a year

% of total mark - 30%

Description - In this controlled assessment the pupil will be given an opportunity to

develop a piece of work using multimedia software (film, animation, sound, pictures and text) in a task issued by WJEC.
