GCSE English will not be available in Wales. Instead pupils will be offered GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature. A few pupils will be following the Entry Level course. This course underpins the GCSE courses and is for those who would find the GCSE courses too demanding.

Key Stage 4 - English Language

The English language course offers a range of experiences involving oral communication and various kinds of writing and reading, the latter including works of literature. It should encourage learners to:-

· demonstrate skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing necessary to communicate with others confidently;

· express themselves creatively and imaginatively;

· become critical readers of a range of texts, using their reading to develop their own skills as writers;

· understand the patterns, structures and conventions of written and spoken English;

· understand the impact of variations in spoken and written language;

· select and adapt spech and writing to different situations.

Nearly all pupils in Years 10 and 11 are entered for this qualification.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment will be based on:-

· External examinations (60%)

· Controlled Assessments (40%)

External Examinations (UNITS 1 & 2)

The examinations will be divided into two tiers:

Foundation G – C Reading and writing of fiction. One 2 hour paper (30%)

Higher D – A* Reading and writing of fiction. One 2 hour (30%)

Controlled Assessments (UNITS 3 & 4)

1. A response to a non- literary text (10%)

2. A piece of creative writing. (10%)

3. Two speaking and listening tasks (20%)

 

Key Stage 4 - ENGLISH LITERATURE

The English literature course centres on pupils’ informed personal response to a range of texts in the genres of prose, poetry and drama. It should encourage learners to:-

· develop and sustain independent interpretations of whole texts;

· analyse connections between texts;

· analyse the impact of style, language, structure aned form;

· relate texts to their social and historical contexts;

· understand how texts from the literary heritage have been significant over time.

Nearly all pupils in Years 10 and 11 are entered for this qualification.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment will be based on:-

· External examination (35%)

· Controlled Assessments (40%)

External Examination (UNIT 1)

The examination will be divided into two tiers:

Foundation G – C

Higher D – A*

1. Study of a prose text from a different culture

2. A comparison of two unseen poems

External Examination (UNIT 2)

Either

a. The study of a drama text form the literary heritage

b. The study of a contemporary prose text

Or

c. The study of a contemporary drama text

d. The study of a prose text from the literary heritage

Controlled Assessment + (UNIT 3)

A study of a Shakespeare play and a group of thematically linked poems from the WJEC poetry collection.
